Faced with a terrible economy and no good options, Violet Hunnicutt makes the best of a less-than-ideal situation and agrees to work at La Lumière Rouge, a Charlotte, N.C. sex shop. Mortified but resigned, Violet can’t help thinking that she doesn’t fit well in the adult novelties industry even though her boss is silently congratulating himself on finding a woman he considers a perfect fit for the job.

As the months pass, Violet begins to question whether happiness comes from working at the perfect place or if it’s self-created – even out of something as untenable as her situation. Befriended by two older women with larger-than-life experience, and guided by the unsolicited advice of the last great Victorian Courtesan, Violet learns about happiness, love, and business on the “sales floor of sin”.
